2014-15 Onwards

  • Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) – A Centrally Sponsored Scheme was launched from 2014-15 for holistic development of horticulture in India through area based, regionally differentiated strategies.
  • During the period 2014-22, an additional area of 1.49 lakh ha of Cashew was covered by state and central efforts.
  • An area of 7990 Ha of senile cashew plantations was removed and replanted with HYVs with financial support of DCCD.
  • A total number of 17,955 farmers were trained on cashew/cocoa farming and post-harvest management and value addition.
  • An area of 2010 Ha was rejuvenated by adopting good horticulture and agro- technique practices during the period.
  • Twenty five cashew model nurseries were established/upgraded for the production and distribution of quality planting materials of cashew.
  • Frontline technology demonstration in an area of 327 Ha was established in the farmer’s field.
  • DCCD was selected as the national level accrediting agency to certify Cashew and Cocoa nurseries both in public and private Sector for ensuring production of quality planting material. 56 such accredited nurseries are presently functioning with a production capacity of 84 lakh cashew grafts/ annum
  • The production of cashew in India was increased to 7.81 lakh MT of raw nuts from an area of 11.92 lakh hectares.

2002-2014

  • The developmental efforts on cashew for the 10th and 11th Five Year Plan have been brought under two systems (a) Macro management in Agriculture development- States efforts through Work Plan (2000-2005) and (b) National Horticulture Mission (2005 onwards).
  • The technologies developed by the research is well perceived by the farming community due to intensive transfer of technology programmes initiated by DCCD and other State level agencies.
  • National Horticulture Mission was launched in the year 2005 thus providing greater importance for holistic development of Cashew and Cocoa in mission mode with prime focus on increasing production and productivity and creation of infrastructure / human resources development etc.

1997-2002

  • The developmental efforts on cashew for the 10th and 11th Five Year Plan have been brought under two systems (a) Macro management in Agriculture development- States efforts through Work Plan (2000-2005) and (b) National Horticulture Mission (2005 onwards).

1992-1997

  • Under the aegis of DCCD, the major programs such as area expansion with HYV’s, Replanting/ Rejuvenation by top working/removal of old and senile trees, adoption of comprehensive production technology, adoption of intensive pest control measures, establishment of regional nurseries, transfer of scientific technologies continued by State Dev. Departments/Cashew Corporations etc have been continued in 8th Plan in an intensive manner.

1985-1990

  • During 7th Five Year Plan, attempts towards the generation of good quality planting material were continued intensively.
  • This period witnessed the release of nearly 25 High Yielding Varieties (HYVs) of Cashew suited to different agro-climatic tracts in India.
  • Towards the fag end of this period, the varietal wealth of cashew increased from 25 to 30 HYV’s due to persistent efforts of research and development entities.
  • Another significant landmark was establishment of 37 Regional Cashew Nurseries with a production potential of 45 lakhs clonal planting material.

1980-1985

  • During 6th Five Year Plan, World Bank aided project for cashew was implemented under private as well as in public sector areas in the States of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
  • Establishment of clonal gardens was another significant change with a view to improve planting material production.

1974-1978

  • The formation of Cashew Development Corporations or Forest Development Corporations to look after the public sector areas was the salient approach in the 5th Five Year Plan.
  • Programmes for conversion of seedlings into clones with in-situ grafting technique were another salient change during this period.

1969-1974

  • A concerted effort for the development of cashew was started from the IVth Five Year Plan onwards.
  • All India Coordinated Cashewnut Improvement Project to take up intensive research on cashew was formed.
  • The Development and Forest Departments of the State Government started systematized development programmes for area expansion of Cashew.
  • Production and distribution of air layers, the first ever known clonal propagation technique, was also supported by Govt. of India.

1966

  • The Directorate of Cashewnut Development was established and a coordinated approach on cashew development with national perspective was initiated.
